Key information about this research study: The following is a short summary of this study to help you decide whether to be a part of this study. More detailed information is listed later in this form under the numbered underlined headings. Consent is being sought for this research study and your participation is voluntary. The purpose of this study is to better understand multitasking abilities. You will answer survey questions about your attitudes towards individuals who identify as nonbinary while concurrently performing a working memory task. We expect that you will be in this research study for up to 30 minutes. Reasons you might choose not to volunteer for the study are unpredicted risks or discomfort can occur during your participation such as emotional stress. Reasons you might choose to volunteer for the study are to contribute to understanding current attitudes towards nonbinary individuals and to experience participation in an online psychology experiment. Participants must be 18 years or older, and have a device with reliable internet access. Those that are under the age of 18 or do not have a device with reliable internet access cannot participate in this study.
1. PURPOSE OF STUDY: The purposes of this study are to better understand attitudes towards nonbinary individuals and to assess how well participants are able to multitask.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY INCLUDING PROCEDURES TO BE USED: You will answer survey questions about your attitudes towards nonbinary individuals while concurrently performing a working memory task. Within this study, “nonbinary” refers to a gender identity that is not exclusively male or female. This includes those who identify as having no gender, a separate third gender, or a combination of genders, etc. This survey is not a test. There are no right or wrong answers on the survey. Please answer each question honestly and accurately. The working memory task will present strings of letters. To correctly recall a letter string, you will need to type the string with letters in the correct order. Your opportunities to recall letter strings will occur after you answer each survey item. Each survey item will appear for 20 seconds. This process could take up to 30 minutes. After the survey is complete, your results will be kept confidential, and we will answer any questions about the study at any time.
3. DESCRIPTION OF ANY PROCEDURES THAT MAY RESULT IN DISCOMFORT OR INCONVENIENCE: Participation in this study will involve minimal inconvenience as you can participate at a time and location of your convenience.
4. EXPECTED RISKS OF THE STUDY: There are minimal known risks to you for participating. It is also possible to experience an increase in anxiety levels. It is always possible that unpredicted risks or discomfort can occur during your participation. This study has been designed to minimize any risk to you. However, should you feel discomfort you are free to discontinue your participation or skip any questions you prefer not to answer. It is possible that you could feel uncomfortable due to the perception that you performed poorly or are being judged. However, there is no pressure in your participation and the data collection is designed to be anonymous. There will be no way for your data to be connected back to you as no identifying information will be tied to the data.
5. EXPECTED BENEFITS OF THE STUDY TO THE PARTICIPANT: The experience will inform understanding of online research procedures for assessing working memory and also for using surveys to assess attitudes.
6. OTHER TREATMENT AVAILABLE: No other treatments are available for this study.
7. USE OF INFORMATION COLLECTED FOR RESEARCH: Anonymous de-identified information or samples that are collected as part of this research could be used for future research studies or distributed to another investigator without your additional informed consent.
8. USE OF RESEARCH RESULTS: This data will add to our knowledge of attitude assessment procedures in general, and attitudes about nonbinary individuals in particular. Information will be disseminated at academic conference(s) and may appear in a peer-reviewed journal. Results will include data at the aggregate level and no identifying information will be included.
9. FREEDOM TO WITHDRAW: Your participation is completely voluntary. Refusal to participate will involve no penalty or loss of benefits that you are otherwise entitled. You can discontinue participation at any time without penalty or loss of benefits that you are otherwise entitled.
